Interns
Students in Environmental Science and Environmental Studies at Northern Arizona University perform internships to get on-the-ground, practical professional experience and link the university with community members. Students design these internships in collaboration with their partners in order to prioritize desired skills and the needs of host organizations.
This year, interns Mara Effinger and Nathan Tannehill are working with Diablo Trust to perform ecological monitoring as well as develop community outreach opportunities for the Trust.
Mara Effinger
I am originally from Wisconsin and have three siblings and a dog named Maya. I enjoy hiking, skiing, and climbing and am attending Northern Arizona University to study Environmental Science with an emphasis in Resource Management. I focus on restorative practices that I can use to better understand our impact on the land and its systems. When I’m not doing homework or hiking, I spend my time drawing or reading outside. I’m a Junior this year and am interning with Diablo Trust because I believe in their mission to create a more sustainable collaborative future for land managers across the Southwest. My internship is focused on environmental communication and outreach to fellow students, professors, and the public.
Nathan Tannehill
I am from Prescott Valley Arizona, and am a senior at Northern Arizona University. I am majoring in Environmental Sciences with an emphasis in applied statistics. I am currently conducting monitoring and research on Pinyon Junipers within cattle range lands. I have an interest in land management and conservation since it has such an impact on our community and state. The Diablo Trust is the perfect way for me to get involved and help my community how I can.

“I work with Diablo Trust to preserve unfragmented landscapes in Coconino County. To achieve that, ranches need to be economically viable to avoid future sale and subdivision.”
